In 1991, a nationally-known and well-loved London Masters swimmer, Ed(win) Thomas, died at age 70. In its early days, Ed supported the 5 km swim by soliciting numerous prizes and awards from his business clients in south-western Ontario. While he regularly swim the 1,500 m in competition, ironically, he never swam in the 5 km race. In 1991, in Ed's memory, UWO Aquatic Masters purchased trophies for the Oldest Woman and Oldest Man completing the course.
Each year, a plaque is applied to each trophy to record its winner.
Subject to the provision of adequate insurance coverage, the winner of each trophy is entitled to hold the trophy until the next championship.

Up to 1999, the age of the swimmer was based upon the actual age of the swimmer on the day of the competition; however, in that year, Masters Swimming Ontario instituted the FINA ruling of basing the swimmers age (for the purposes of competition) on the age of the swimmer at 31st December in the year in which the competition takes place. Since the swim is organized for the first Sunday after Labour Day, the date of the swim can range from 8-15 September. Under these circumstances, some swimmers ages (as recorded prior to 1999) may not increment by a year for each increment in calendar year.
